Why Digital Distribution?

Digital distribution is the process whereby content been it audio, video, games, pictures, e-books, softwares, PDFs are delivered (through uploading) to any digital content platform. it is handled through a digital distribution platform that is  designed to stream or download in full the digital content.

With digital distribution, you can get your content across all over the world from the comfort of your room and by that reducing the stress of moving from one physical store to the other.

Initially, distributors have to enter an agreements with record labels to sell to stores. However, digital distribution changed all that by cutting out the middleman, allowing artists to distribute music directly to online stores while having control over their songs and keeping 100% of their royalties.

The transition into the online space has boosted sales, downloads and profit for most artists. It has also allowed for potentially lower expenses such as lower coordination costs, lower distribution costs, as well as the possibility for redistributed total profits. These lower costs have also aided new artists in breaking onto the scene and gaining recognition. In the past, some emerging artists have struggled to find a way to market themselves and compete in the various distribution channels.

Digital distribution give artists more control over their music in terms of creative, rights, ownership process, pricing, and more.
In addition to providing global users with easier access to content, online stores allow users to choose the songs they wish instead of having to purchase an entire album from which there may only be one or two titles that the buyer enjoys.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS A MUSICIAN: A SIMPLE GUIDE TO DIGITAL ROYALTIES

Have you just released the greatest track ever? Congratulations! Do you have any idea how you will get paid what you’re owed and not get ripped off? Through my extensive work in publishing administration, I’ve seen that unfortunately too few artists really know their rights when it comes to collecting royalties on their music.
This state of affairs doesn’t surprise me since the world of publishing, rights, and royalties is incredibly complex. That’s why I thought it could be helpful to give independent artists a simple(r) guide to getting all the cash that’s their due.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

First, let’s establish what rights you have as an artist.
When you create a song you are in fact the owner of two distinct copyrights: one for the sound recording(sometimes referred to as a “master”), and one for the underlying composition (the melody, chords, and what makes the recording unique). When you record a composition you have written, two copyrights are created, each of which requires different forms of administration to ensure the cash they generate flows to you, the rights owner.

GET TREATED LIKE ROYALTY

When you use a distributor to provide your track to an online platform such as Spotify or Apple Music there are three royalties to be collected for the two copyrights (sound recording and composition) you own as the rights holder: artist/master royalties, performance royalties, and mechanical royalties.
To ensure you receive these three different revenue streams you need three different types of professionals working to collect them:
  1. A distributor
  2. A performing rights organization (or PRO)
  3. A publishing administrator
A distributor such as TuneCore can submit your track to more than 150 streaming platforms worldwide. They then collect the royalties generated from the stream or use of your sound recording. These royalties are artist royalties or master royalties. TuneCore’s custom graphic below helps to demystify your available royalties.

You’re all set now that you have ensured that a distribution partner is getting you all the royalties you’re duefor streams or downloads, right? Wrong! You forgot about performance royalties and mechanical royalties.

BECOME A PRO

In addition to the artist royalty you receive when your song is streamed, you are also due a performance royalty. The public performance or broadcast of a composition generates a performance royalty, and in order to collect these you need to be registered with a performing rights organization (PRO). There are many around the world for each territory but in the U.S. the main ones are ASCAP and BMI.
The PRO will collect royalties from the performance of your compositions on radio, in bars and restaurants, as well as income from film/television placements and live venues. In fact, if you’ve played a gig at a licensed venue, you can submit your setlist to ASCAP or BMI, who will then pay you royalties for your own songs that you’ve performed live.
It is important to know that a performance royalty is split into two: the writer’s share and the publisher’s share. The writer’s share is always paid directly to the songwriter, bypassing a publisher. This ensures the songwriter receives their share of the performance income should they enter into an agreement with a music publisher.

It is quite common for people early in their career to think a PRO is collecting all the royalties they are due. However, they are simply a performing rights organization and they won’t collect the third revenue stream, the mechanical royalty, which is generated when a song is reproduced, retransmitted, or rebroadcast.

GET THEE TO THE PUB

In the digital age, your music is global as soon as you upload it to a platform like Spotify. Collecting all the revenue requires a global collection network and income tracking team as there are multiple societies around the world collecting performance and mechanical royalties. A music publishing administrator such as TuneCore will proactively manage and optimize all the royalties due. They work in tandem with your PRO to maximize performance royalty collections worldwide.
As the copyright owner, you could register with each individual entity around the world, track these royalties, and make yourself crazy in the process. A publishing administrator’s role extends far beyond simply collecting mechanical royalties. I estimate there are 120 different groups of revenue streams for a composition, which, in theory, could be broken down into thousands of revenue streams in total from all territories. That is a lot of tracking that needs to be done.
A team like mine over at TuneCore has professionals and proprietary software systems designed to help track, monetize, and collect income from your compositions. Because when artists have leading edge technology, teams, and services helping them get paid, they are freed up to focus on doing what they do best: create music.

Stupid Men Chase Women With Shapes Without Brains - Counsellor Dr. Mrs Charlotte Oduro

Men are attracted to the opposite sex and eventually get into relationship with them depending on the characteristics they see and what motivates them. Whereas some men are overly obsessed with shapes and sizes in their quest to settle down in marriages, others have varying qualities they look for in their partners they prepare to walk down the aisle with.
Controversial marriage counsellor, Dr. Mrs Charlotte Oduro believes that choosing a woman based on her looks and shape alone is the work of stupid men because it goes beyond meeting the satisfaction of the eye. “Everyone is looking for shape…big buttocks, big breasts and big everything. It is good for a woman to possess an attractive shape, breast and buttocks but any woman who has no sense has no future. She is doomed and will be a failure for the husband”, she observed. In her estimation, men should go for women who have sense not the ones with attractive shapes but empty upstairs.
“Don’t go for women with shapes but those who with intelligence, have the fear of God in them and submissive”, she advised. Source: Mynewsgh.com

I Will Never Apologies To Bullet – Kelvyn Boy

Burniton Music Group Signee and Afrobeat singer, Kelvyn Boy, has refused to apologies for comments deemed “harsh” about Wendy Shay and her manager Bullet, formerly of Ruff N Smooth. The artiste, born Kelvin Brown, had said he would not beef someone who could not write her own songs. He also claimed Bullet's songwriting skills were stale. He was accused of trying to start a beef with Wendy Shay when he snubbed her at the Shatta-Stone peace press conference. Many of his and Wendy's fans on social media had called for an apology, calling him arrogant for ignoring Wendy publicly.
But in an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Friday, Kelvyn Boy said he was being honest and does not owe anyone an apology. According to him, when he was accused of snubbing Wendy Shay, he called Bullet to explain his side of the story because he believed bloggers would spin the story to suit them. “If something has happened you cannot just post on social media that I am beefing your artiste because of an award. I am like you that you are writing for her, your vibe is dead so I will write for you to give to her. Your song no dey pass my ‘Odo’ (song),” he told Andy Dosty, host of the show. Kelvyn Boy explained contrary to Bullet’s assertions, he is not jealous if Wendy Shay or her award as ‘Best New Artiste of the Year’.
The 'Mea' hitmaker stated the award given to Wendy Shay has not dampened his spirits neither does it assure her of success in the future. “There are artistes who have won awards and have been coming to me for features, life is like that,” he added. Kelvyn Boy told Andy Dosty he is disappointed in the actions of Bullet as a manager, “I would never apologise to him.” Sources: myjoyonline.com

Sister Derby Is Still Inlove with Me – Medikal Brags

Medikal’s penchant for bragging has been well established, the rapper just hypes himself up over anything whether true or false. He called himself the saviour of Gh rap yet could not survive even one beef, and now he claims his ex, Sister Derby still loves him as a person. The "Omo Ada" hit maker bragged in an interview with Klassik Radio in the U.S where he’s currently stationed that he’s a very respectful person and because of that, women always love him including his ex-girlfriends. He said: “I have respect for women that’s why they love me. That’s why my ex still loves me and my girlfriend Fella Makafui loves me.” So Sister Derby, the person Medikal humiliated by cheating behind her back with Fella and then dumping her for that same Fella, still loves him? Much like his claim to have saved Gh rap, this boast doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. The kid should know when to stop the lies because no one is buying that bull. Source: ghanacelebrities.com
